Hello and welcome to CELCIS website! I am Mary Lu Light, an Associate Language Specialist and Curriculum Co-Coordinator. I first started teaching at CELCIS in 1975. Before coming to CELCIS, I earned a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Indiana University. In order to keep up with new ideas in our field I became a member of the Michigan Teachers of English as a Second Language, and the National Teachers of English as a Second Language. I first became interested in languages and cultures when I was 17 years old and I went to Mexico to study Spanish. That trip changed my life. It made me realize how big the world is and how interesting it is to know more about other people, languages, and cultures. Later, I also studied French, Japanese, and Hebrew. Teaching students in CELCIS has provided me with wonderful opportunities to learn about many languages, cultures, and countries. I have discovered that students learn the most when they are excited about what they learn. I still feel that excitement of wanting to learn more about the world. Come to CELCIS, teach me about your country and I will teach you to use English!! You can contact me to learn more about CELCIS. My e-mail address is: lightm@wmich.edu |
