MISSION STATEMENT
for the
Career English Language Center for International Students
(CELCIS)
at
WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY


The mission of the Career English Language Center for International Students (CELCIS), established in 1975, is to provide instruction in English as a second language for non-native speakers who will use English to study at an American college or university or in their work places.


CELCIS accomplishes this mission by offereing language instruction and cultural orientation in:

  • a year-round intensive English language program
  • English as a second language bridge courses offered through the Department of English
  • training and consulting to international teaching assistants and faculty through the Graduate College and the Office of the Provost

CELCIS has three target areas of service:

  • service to international students
  • service to Western Michigan University
  • service to the southwestern Michigan community

CELCIS is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation;
CELCIS complies with the guidelines and regulations of the following professional organizations: CEA, TESOL, UCIEP, AAIEP, and NAFSA
