Achievement Award in Teaching
The College of Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan calls for creating awards to recognize faculty contributions to the themes and commitments in the plan, including contributions of the faculty to the disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching goals of the college.
Nature of the Award
- Up to three awards may be made each year.
- Each recipient will receive a plaque at special dinner celebration. $500 will be put in the departmental research account for the recipient to use in support of teaching, research or creative activity, travel, or professional development.
- Each recipient will be invited to present a lecture, seminar, or lunch (brown bag) presentation to describe some aspect of teaching.
Eligibility
- All current, continuing board-appointed persons with faculty rank are eligible.
- Nominees must have at least three academic years of service at WMU prior to nomination for the award. Consequently, board-appointed faculty in their fourth year of service at WMU are eligible for nomination. Faculty with less than three years academic service cannot be considered for the award.
- No individual may receive the award more than once.
Selection Criteria
- The award will be based on outstanding teaching, including graduate and undergraduate classroom instruction, mentoring, independent study, field work, laboratory work, thesis and dissertation advising, undergraduate and graduate advising, curriculum innovation or any other work in which the faculty interact with students to promote learning.
- The award will be based on an accumulated record of achievement as a teacher.
- The recipient is expected to be favorably evaluated on student-rating questionnaires, but favorable ratings alone are insufficient to receive the award.
- The award must be primarily based on teaching done at Western Michigan University.
