Achievement Award in Professional and Community Service
The College of Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan
calls for creating awards to recognize faculty contributions to the
themes and commitments in the plan, including university, professional,
and community service.
Nature of the Award
- Up to three awards may be made each year.
- Each recipient will receive a plaque at a special dinner celebration. $500 will be put in the departmental research
account for the recipient to use in support of teaching, research
or creative activity, travel, or professional development.
- Each recipient will be invited to present a lecture, seminar,
or lunch (brown bag) meeting to describe their approach to community
service, the relationship between service and other academic obligations,
or another related topic.
Eligibility
- All current, continuing board-appointed persons with faculty rank are eligible.
- Nominees must have at least three academic years of service at WMU prior to nomination for the award. Consequently, board-appointed faculty in their fourth year of service at WMU are eligible for nomination. Faculty with less than three years academic service cannot be considered for the award.
- No individual may receive the award more than once.
Selection Criteria
- The award will be based on outstanding service, including service
to the university, community, and professional organizations.
- The award will usually be based on an accumulated record of achievement,
rather than a single service project or event.
- There should be evidence of the beneficial impact of the recipient's
work on the effectiveness of the university, a community organization,
or professional association. If the award is substantially based
on community service, nominators should address the impact of the
nominee's work on university-community relations.
- The award must be primarily based on work done while at Western
Michigan University.
