Achievement Award in Research and Creative Activity

The College of Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan calls for creating awards to recognize faculty contributions to the themes and commitments in the plan, including contributions of the faculty to disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and creative activity.

Nature of the Award

  1. Up to three awards may be made each year.
  2. Each recipient will receive a plaque at a special dinner celebration. $500 will be put in the departmental research account for the recipient to use in support of teaching, research or creative activity, travel, or professional development.
  3. Each recipient will be invited to present a lecture, seminar, or lunch (brown bag) presentation to describe some aspect of teaching.

Eligibility

  1. All current, continuing board-appointed persons with faculty rank are eligible.
  2. Nominees must have at least three academic years of service at WMU prior to nomination for the award. Consequently, board-appointed faculty in their fourth year of service at WMU are eligible for nomination. Faculty with less than three years academic service cannot be considered for the award.
  3. No individual may receive the award more than once.

Selection Criteria

  1. The award will be based on scholarly achievements in research and creative activity. These achievements may be philosophical, historical, literary, scientific, or technical and must constitute significant contributions to understanding and portraying the human condition or the natural world. The award may be given for disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary scholarship.
  2. The award will usually be based on an accumulated record of achievement, rather than a particular piece of research, creative work, or other achievements.
  3. There should be evidence of wide recognition by the academic/professional/artistic community beyond Western Michigan University.
  4. A substantial part of the achievement shall have been accomplished as a faculty member at WMU.
