Major Excitement III
Thursday, September 18, 2008
Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences
Location: Outside the new Chemistry Building on the walkway
1 to 4 p.m.
Featuring information stations highlighting the different majors (and minors) available throughout the College of Arts and Sciences
This year, we would like to invite you to take part in this exciting event.
The purpose of the event is to introduce undecided students to the many potential majors that exist within the University (a total of 237 at last count). A second goal of the event is to assist students in selecting a major—earlier in their college careers—that is compatible with their skills and interests.
Yet another benefit of the event is to introduce students to faculty members, graduate students and alumni from their selected field of study and to facilitate a personal connection between and amongst each other. These faculty, students and alumni are recruited to staff each information station to talk with students who visit the event.
Major Excitement III will feature music, games, prizes, giveaways, trivia questions, and interest profiles. Students will have the opportunity to visit information stations set up by each department (or College) to learn about the coursework requirements, and see the types of jobs that may be obtained as a result of majoring in that subject.
Career & Student Employment Services will provide major-specific career pathway resources, personality/occupational interest surveys and preprofessional résumé guidance.
Departments/programs who participated in 2007 include: Africana Studies, Chemistry, Philosophy, Mallinson Institute for Science Education, Spanish, English, Economics, Comparative Religion, Geosciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Institute, Statistics, Anthropology, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, History, Foreign Languages, Comparative Religion, Nonprofit Leadership, Public Relations Organization (PRO), Study Abroad, International Studies, College of Education, Communication, Environmental Studies, Career and Student Employment Services, and Gender and Women’s Studies,
All incoming first-year students will be invited to take part in the event in a variety of ways. Passports to the event will be inserted in Orientation and First Year Experience Seminar packets, as well as distributed during the Study Abroad Fair and Bronco Bash. Any student who visits six or more information stations and gets their “M.E. Passports” stamped, will be eligible for the grand prize drawing. Last year, we awarded five new Dell printer and a Dell data projector, as well as many smaller door prizes like t-shirts, coupons for oil changes, hair cuts and tanning, and of course, lots of coupons for free food.
The Major Excitement III committee is already hard at work soliciting donations of prizes, arranging for publicity and preparing marketing materials. If you would like to be a part of this exciting event, please email Cheri Bales, Coordinator of Communications and Events at cheri.bales@wmich.edu, so you may be updated via e-mail on future organizational meetings, preparations, content for news releases and other items.
