Faculty Awards
A & S Faculty Teaching & Research Award (ASTRA)
The ASTRA award is a faculty development award initiated by the College to support travel, teaching innovations and provide seed money for faculty research/creative activity projects. The intent is to provide limited funds to encourage innovations in teaching, and scholarly activities. Applications will be accepted 3 times a year.
The application deadlines for the 2008/2009 Academic Year are: September 19, 2008, December 19, 2008 and March 13th, 2009.
Funds are limited so that no faculty may receive more than $1000 per year. No more than $500 of the $1000 may be for travel. Research support is provided for seed projects in preparation for external funding or in areas where no other sources of funding are available. These funds are not a replacement for the university's Faculty Research and Travel Fund. The ASTRA award is not intended for general computer upgrading or the purchase of classroom equipment.
Applicant's Form is available from this site. Applicants will need to have their chair complete and sign the chair's portion of the application. Faculty should assure that both forms are returned to the College prior to the due dates. Applicant form in Word Format and Chair portion form in Word Format is available be be printed out.

Faculty Achievement Award in Teaching
The College of Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan calls for creating awards to recognize faculty contributions to the themes and commitments in the plan, including contributions of the faculty to the disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching goals of the college.
Nature of the Award
- Up to three awards may be made each year.
- Each recipient will receive a plaque at the Dean's State of the College. Address. $500 will be put in the departmental research account for the recipient to use in support of teaching, research or creative activity, travel, or professional development.
- Each recipient will be invited to present a lecture, seminar, or lunch (brown bag) presentation to describe some aspect of teaching.
Eligibility
- All current, continuing board-appointed persons with faculty rank are eligible.
- Nominees must have at least three academic years of service at WMU prior to nomination for the award. Consequently, board-appointed faculty in their fourth year of service at WMU are eligible for nomination. Faculty with less than three years academic service cannot be considered for the award.
- No individual may receive the award more than once.
Selection Criteria
- The award will be based on outstanding teaching, including graduate and undergraduate classroom instruction, mentoring, independent study, field work, laboratory work, thesis and dissertation advising, undergraduate and graduate advising, curriculum innovation or any other work in which the faculty interact with students to promote learning.
- The award will be based on an accumulated record of achievement as a teacher.
- The recipient is expected to be favorably evaluated on student-rating questionnaires, but favorable ratings alone are insufficient to receive the award.
- The award must be primarily based on teaching done at Western Michigan University.

- Each recipient will be invited to present a lecture, seminar,
or lunch (brown bag) meeting to describe their approach to community
service, the relationship between service and other academic obligations,
or another related topic.
Eligibility

- Nominees must have at least three academic years of service at WMU prior to nomination for the award. Consequently, board-appointed faculty in their fourth year of service at WMU are eligible for nomination. Faculty with less than three years academic service cannot be considered for the award.
