Did you know…
All workers have a right to an environment free from discrimination and harassment. This includes paid interns, interns receiving college credit and part-time workers. There are various laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender-identity, national origin, age, height, weight, familial status, marital status and disability in education and employment.
Internships and other college employment opportunities give students valuable work experience. A safe and respectful work environment is the foundation for learning and productivity.
Know your rights and responsibilities
- Read the employee handbook and ask questions if there is something you don’t understand.
- Employers need to be made aware of harassing or discriminatory conduct so they may remedy the situation. Contact your supervisor, or if you are uncomfortable with your supervisor, go to Human Resources.
- We are here to help. If you would like to talk with someone at WMU about how to address inappropriate behavior you have experienced while working, contact the Office of Institutional Equity at (269) 387-6316 or Career and Student Employment Services at (269) 387-2745. You may also use an online reporting form at wmich.edu/equity/reporting-forms.
