Internships/Co-ops

What is an internship?
Internships are work experiences which allow you to explore career options. Internships can be full-time or part-time. Some internship experiences receive academic credit, some do not. Some programs have required internships. Some internships are paid, some are unpaid, some offer stipends, and some provide housing. Early research will allow time to plan for course availability and costs of essential arrangements.

Why are internships important?
Experience is one of the best ways to enhance your employability in your chosen career field. WMU students are encouraged to participate in an internship or cooperative education experience and often work with their academic advisors or academic department advisor to obtain credit for their internships.

When should I conduct an internship?
The most popular time to arrange an internship is the summer of the junior year, but internships and co-ops can be pursued at any time, depending upon employer need, the type of coursework you have mastered, class schedules and curriculum requirements.

Are all internships the same?
Internships can be full-time or part-time. Some internship experiences receive academic credit, some do not. Some programs have required internships. Some internships are paid, some are unpaid, some offer stipends, and some provide housing. Early research will allow time to plan for course availability and costs of essential arrangements.

How do I find an internship?
Some employers visit campus to conduct interviews for internship candidates just as they conduct interviews for full-time job candidates. Go to BroncoJOBS, log in and Click on the "Jobs/Internships" tab. Click on "Internships" and search. Jobs with interview icon are open for interviews.

How can the Career Network help me during the internship search process?
Career advisors are available to discuss internship opportunities and other career topics with you. Click here for more information about drop-in career advising hours and career advising appointments.

YOUR COMPREHENSIVE INTERNSHIP STRATEGY

College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Co-op/Internship Program

There are three separate programs available in co-op/internship in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. They are:

  1. Alternating Co-op: Students alternate semesters of school and work until they have completed three semesters of work experience. Students would normally start this program at the end of their sophomore year of study.
  2. Summer Internship: Students are employed in industry for the summer period, which is normally from May 1 until approximately the end of August. Students may do summer internships in their home area or in the Kalamazoo area. The end of the sophomore year is the normal starting time, however some students may start earlier.
  3. Parallel Co-op: Students are employed with companies in the Kalamazoo area for 12-15 hours per week in the Fall and Spring semesters and may work more of a full time basis in the Summer. This employment may continue for a number of years right up to the student's graduation. This has normally been available at the end of the sophomore year. Some companies are hiring students at the end of their freshman year for this particular experience.

All of the above positions are paid and the average salary is currently $12 per hour.
