Trim Engineering SMTE at Johnson Controls

I work as an automotive trim engineering SMTE (subject matter technical expert). I develop automotive seating trim cover product design and safety features for vehicle seating in North America and Europe.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding and challenging part of my job is combined into safety features of the vehicle seat. Legal and manufacturing requirements are part of my responsibility in developing our standard practices for design.

What activities, resources, or people helped you prepare for your career?

I was very involved with many RSOs; mainly WSA, and I served as a senator and Chief of Operations. In these positions I developed my leadership and time management skills, which have carried through into my career and current position.

What advice would you offer students to help them decide on a career path?

Be very open to a company or position that you may not think matches your degree or experience. Hold a strong work/life balance. Find events or hobbies outside of work and get involved with your colleagues at and out of work.
