Scholarships
WMU Scholarships
Each year, Finance and Commercial Law majors and minors are invited to apply for various scholarships available to all business students through the Office of Student Development. In addition, there are a number of scholarships that are available solely for FCL students.
The qualifications and conditions associated with scholarships follow:
Charles C. and Lynn Zhang and Associates Scholarships.
- Two scholarship awards
- Undergraduate BBA with Finance or Personal Financial Planner major
- Awarded to a Junior and Senior level student with the highest cumulative GPA, and by the recommendation of the Chair.
- Academic based award
- Maintain a minimum course load of 12 credit hours
- Award Amount: $1000 for each awardee at the end of Spring semester
- Minimum GPA 3.00 for consideration
- Entering Junior year
- Undergraduate BBA with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major
- Extracurricular activities at WMU considered
- Need based award
- Must have solid history of prior work experiences, especially during previous semesters enrolled at WMU
- Award amount: $5,000 for junior year, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (renewable one time for a total of two years)
Cinq-Mars Jarvis Scholarship
Application
- Minimum GPA 3.00 for consideration
- Entering Junior year
- Undergraduate BBA with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major
- Extracurricular activities at WMU considered
- Need based award
- Must have solid history of prior work experiences, especially during previous semesters enrolled at WMU
- Award amount: $2,500 for junior year, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (renewable one time for a total of two years)
Davette Susan Jones Endowed Scholarship in Finance
Application
- Preference given to WMU students who are members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Kalamazoo Michigan.
- Preference given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Finance or Personal Financial Planning with a 2.5 GPA at time of application. If no undergraduate student is eligible, then award may be given to an MBA student with a finance concentration with a 3.0 GPA at time of application.
- For students who meet the above qualifications, preference will be given to a student who is participating in the University’s Study Abroad Program.
- Need based award.
- Award amount: $500, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (non-renewable).
Edwin Grossnickle Scholarship
Application
- Undergraduate BBA student with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major
- Preference given to full-time, junior-level student
- Awarded for Fall semester tuition only
- Not a need-based award
- $1,000 one-time tuition award (not renewable)
- Undergraduate BBA - Minimum GPA 3.00 for consideration
- Graduate MBA - Minimum GPA 3.30 for consideration
- Business students participating in study abroad program or participating in an international business seminar
- Need based award
- $500 for Fall or Spring (nonrenewable)
McCarty Morrison Scholarship
Application
- Minimum GPA 3.00 for consideration
- Senior BBA student
- Must be planning to attend Law School (preference for Big 10 Law School)
- $300 for Fall (non-renewable)
State Farm Scholarship in Finance
Application
- Two scholarship awards
- Undergraduate BBA student with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major
- Preference to students planning to pursue careers in insurance or financial services
- Awarded on basis of scholarship and professional activities/accomplishments
- Not a need based award
- Award amount: $2,000 for junior year, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (renewable one time for a total of two years)
Scholarships Funded by Outside Organizations Available Only to WMU Students
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Exam Scholarships
Application
- Awarded to WMU students who plan to sit for the CFA Level 1 Exam
- Covers all but $220 of the cost of registration, enrollment, and CFA curriculum materials
- Student must be a full-time student in final year of undergraduate studies OR a graduate student
- GPA and academic performance are criteria used in awarding these scholarships

Greenleaf Trust Scholarship in Finance
Application
- Up to eight scholarship awards or renewals annually
- Applicants must be full-time WMU undergraduate students in pre-business who intend to major in Finance or Personal Financial Planning or business students who have declared majors in Finance or Personal Financial Planning
- Preference given to incoming freshmen and transfer students
- Preference given to students from under-represented ethnic groups
- Applicant must have a 2.5 minimum GPA
- After the first year, the scholarship may be renewed for an additional three consecutive academic years provided the student maintains a 2.5 minimum GPA
- Recipients must be declared Finance or Personal Financial Planning majors by their junior year to retain the scholarship
- Award amount: $10,000, with half dispersed fall semester and half dispersed spring semester.
Society of Financial Services Professionals – Southwest Michigan Chapter, Financial Service Scholarship
Application
- Three scholarship awards
- Awarded to WMU junior or senior pursuing a degree related to a financial service career, including insurance agents, financial planners, accountants, attorney, etc.
- Preference given to students with community involvement/school activities that demonstrate a commitment to serving the needs of others
- Applicants must have a 3.0 minimum GPA
- Awarded on basis of scholarship and professional activities/accomplishments
- Not a need based award
- Award amount: $1,000
Scholarships Funded by Outside Organizations
George Harding Fund Charitable Trust Scholarship by the Michigan Bankers Association
Information and application
- Awarded to Michigan resident who is a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
- Degree program must be finance-related, business administration, economics, etc.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Available to juniors and seniors
- Campus activities and evidence of leadership qualities are considered
- Award amount: $1,000
Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Eduational Foundation Scholarships
- Approximately ten $5,000 scholarships
- Major must be related to a career in insurance
- Undergraduate or graduate degree program in Actuarial Science, Business, Economics, Finance, Insurance, Management, Risk Management, or Statistics
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Need based award

Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program
- Application
Contest, with essay submission of article on "How to solve the foreclosure crisis" Open to All college students
- Prizes awarded:
- First place $5,000.00 scholarship
- Second through fifth place $1,000.00 scholarship each.
- The best 5 Articles will also be submitted to the Congress and President Barack Obama

Insurance Scholarship Foundation of America
Awards scholarships to junior or senior students majoring or minoring in insurance, risk management or actuarial science.

The deadline is January 15, 2010.
Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS)
Application
- Applicant must be candidate for a bachelor or master's degree in a business related field and must be interested in a career in risk management or insurance. Applicants enrolled in an Insurance Institute of America (IIA/AICPCU) program are also eligible.
- Minimum GPA 2.5 or higher.
- Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Specificallly, a student must not be receiving full reimbursement from his/her employer or other sources.
- Previous recipients may also reapply.
