Before you Connect

Before connecting to ResNet, please read the following.

  • The computer must have one of the allowed anti-virus applications installed on your machine to access to ResNet. A list of acceptable Anti-Virus applications, please visit ResNet: Allowed AV Applications.
  • Make sure you have an Ethernet cable connected to your computer. These can be purchased at any electronics or computer store, as well as the WMU Bookstore.
  • There is a charge of $80 per semester for Fall and Winter and $40 each for Summer I and Summer II. Up to three machines may be registered for this fee, e.g. a desktop, a laptop and a game console. This charge is billed to the student's WMU account.
  • If you have problems connecting, please call the OIT Help Desk at 387-HELP (4357) for assistance.

Connecting your Computer

To connect to ResNet:

  1. Locate your standard Ethernet cable.
  2. Locate the box on the wall that contains the phone and data jacks.
  3. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the data jack. Be sure the plug is firmly in place.
  4. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer.
  5. Turn on your computer and start your web browser. You will automatically be taken to the registration page.
    • Only register your OWN equipment. You will be billed for devices registered in your name.
  6. Read the user agreement and click 'Accept'
  7. Click 'Start' next to the 'Clients'
  8. Enter your BroncoNet ID and Password, a phone number for us to reach you at, and click Download.

ResNet Client

  • In order to connect to ResNet, your computer must be running an anti-virus program. Western Michigan University supports and recommends Symantec Endpoint Protection. This is available for free at GoWMU on the left-hand side under Virus Protection Downloads, or visit the Help Desk.
  • Requirements:
    • A supported Anti-Virus client with the most up to date definitions: List of Compatible Anti Virus Applications
    • The latest Windows Service Pack (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, Service Pack 2 for Vista)
    • Automatic Updates Enabled

Note: If these requirements are not met, you will receive an error message, continue here, for troubleshooting steps.

  • If after following these steps, you still receive an error message, contact the Help Desk.

How to Add Your Game Console to the Network

Go to the above link and click on the appropriate console or system to learn how to register your console or system.
