This document explains how to use Enterprise Directory distribution lists to e-mail your entire class. (see also "E-mailing Your Class Using GoWMU") This procedure will work for the instructor(s) of record for the pertinent class. In most cases, the department chair, and anyone in the department with a designation of office assistant, office associate, and/or office coordinator may also make use of that list (for example, an instructor cannot attend his/her class that day and has no access to e-mail, the office associate may use the list to send his/her class an e-mail to inform them). Note: error messages and explanations below. Using your own e-mail client, enter the following string in the "To:" field:
1. Class subject abbreviation, e.g. ANTH
2. Course number, e.g. 1050
3. Hyphen (-)
4. Calendar year, e.g. 2006
5. Hyphen (-)
6. CRN (course reference number), e.g. 40006 *@wmich.edu

Error messages and explanations
When you use this addressing method to send to your class, the list is built from scratch using inquiries to the student database (a "soft" list). This insures that it is the most current list. After the message is sent the list is discarded by the system. If there is a student inbox that is over quota, that message does not go to that student and you get a message "Your message has been enqueued and undeliverable for 1 day to the following recipients" back indicating that there was a problem sending the message. The recipient shown is the list name. Privacy (and the lack of a "hard" list) prevent the system from disclosing who might have the full inbox.
It appears that the message was not delivered at all. The "enqueued" remark however, indicates that the message was properly accepted, and that you had the authority/permission to send it. What this ultimately means is that one (or more) students in the list are over quota. The system will keep the message in the sending queue and will continue to attempt to deliver it for a number of days. At some point it assumes that the student recipient will see that their e-mail account is over quota and will fix it by removing unneeded/unwanted messages.
Another type of responder message would indicate that you were not authorized to send to the list (that would likely appear immediately). This indicates a issue in the Banner system (wrong instructor of record listed for a class or no instructor of record for a class). The academic department should be able to address this issue as can the registrars office.
Another type of responder message would indicate that the e-mail address was not found (or something similar). Since this is a "soft" list, you should never get that type of message. This would seem to indicate an issue with the system and likely the OIT Help Desk would need to be notified.
