Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biological Sciences. Dr. Stapleton's research focuses on understanding the mechanism(s) by which a variety of factors regulate the expression of genes involved in hepatic lipogenesis and the overall relationship to metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The factors currently studied range from hormones, such as insulin and thyroid hormone, to a metabolite of alcohol, the xenobiotic, acetaldehyde, to dietary trace elements, such as vanadium and selenium as well as environmental contaminants. Protein chemistry, cell culture and techniques in molecular biology including DNA, RNA isolation, cloning and PCR, are used in these studies. Dr. Stapleton has numerous publications in these areas. Professor Stapleton teaches courses in biochemistry.
