Associate Professor of Chemistry. Professor Reinhold's research involves two basic areas in the field of cancer research. One project deals with investigating the biochemical mechanisms of tumor formation. The laboratory examines normal human fibroblasts and human fibrosarcoma cells (tumor cells of fibroblastic origin) and looks at various biochemical pathways to determine the differences that exist between these two types of cells. The second project studies the potential role of certain metals (cadmium, chromium, and nickel) in the transformation of human cells to tumor cells. Specifically, he is trying to determine if these metals affect the mutagenic rate of known carcinogens such as benzo [a] pyrene diol-epoxide (BPCE). These projects are currently funded by grants form the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Pardee Foundation.
