Research Description

Global change ecology

Associate Professor of Biological Sciences. Dr. Karowe and his students currently are investigating potential ecological consequences of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide. Dr. Karowe's lab is asking whether and how the nutritional quality and defensive chemistry of plants change under elevated CO2, whether such changes affect the growth, survivorship, and behavior of higher trophic levels (insect herbivores, parasitoids, and hyperparasitoids), and whether atomospheric change will affect the potential for rapid adaptive evolution of plants and animals. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 to include higher trophic levels. This work is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.
