Area of Research: Evolution/Behavioral Ecology
Professor Cowans interests are in behavioral ecology and evolution, and in particular, the reproductive behavior of insects in the Order Hymenoptera. His current projects involve the relationship between inbreeding and sex determination in solitary wasps and the influence of venereally transmitted mites on mating behavior. Dr. Cowans work includes the study of populations in nature, laboratory breeding and behavior experiments, and the use of molecular markers for genetic analysis.
