Calendar of the NIH Bridges Program

September 1, 2007-August 31, 2008

2007/2008 Academic Year

  • Dr. Ficsor will visit all five CCs to sign sub-contracts and start the program for the year
  • During the academic year Program Coordinators (PCs) through involving the science faculty and others working with under represented minority students, will identify potential qualified students for the Bridges Program.  Encourage interested students to apply for Bridges Research Assistantship.
  • Assist students admitted into the Bridges Program to prepare for the Mentored Research Experience during May - August, 2008.
  • Students to be accepted or not accepted as RAs will be notified in 5 working days after receipt of a complete application.
  • All accepted applications as Research Assistants from GRCC, HFCC, and LMC are urged to apply immediately for appointment as part-time employees during the Academic Year provided funds and research opportunities are extant.  

May 12, 2008, Monday, Noon-2PM, Ground Floor of Wood Hall, WMU, Kalamazoo

  • Lunch and orientation for all admitted RAs, Community College Program Coordinators and research mentors. Required for RAs. A paid activity.

May 13 - May 23

  • Required Introduction to Research workshop for all RAs. A paid activity.

May 26-August 22

  • RAs participate in mentored research experience. A paid activity.

Overview comment on colloquia May - August, 2008: 

Colloquia every 2nd or 3rd Friday, all day, is a required activity of all RAs. The colloquia will provide opportunity for interaction between RAs doing research in different cities and laboratories.  The colloquia will also be an opportunity to get to know 3 centers of research excellence and possible institutes for graduate work toward the Ph.D. degree.  These will be all day events including travel, presentation by faculty researchers, campus and city visits.  Out of town students will start in time that they will arrive by 10 AM in the city of destination.  Activities will end at 3 PM at which time out of town RAs can begin their trip home. RAs from one city are expected to car pool. The driver from the pooled car will be reimbursed for car mileage at .445 per mile.  THE DATES OF THE COLLOQUIA WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN MAY 2008.
