Outreach Coordinator at Kingman Museum in Battle Creek, a small natural history museum with a planetarium has a great learning experience for those interested in teaching or working in the museum environment. We are open to students looking to volunteer a few hours a month or work as an un-paid intern. Global Vision International

Expedition Focus: Volunteer as a member of GVI's research team and experience dolphins, primates and big game. The expedition looks at the biodiversity of the immediate region around Shimoni which is on the Kenyan border with mainland Tanzania - a unique opportunity to combine marine, forest and national park research. The expedition also examines how local communities affect and utilize the region's natural resources, and aims to help these communities profit from their resources in a sustainable manner.

Expedition members are needed for periods of 5, 10 and 15 weeks.Projects include: marine mammal research recording bottlenose dolphins, Indian Ocean Humpback dolphins, Spinner dolphins and larger cetacean such as Humpback whales; marine mega-fauna research, including turtles, whalesharks, and manta rays (seasonal,); big game and community projects in National Parks eg. elephant relocation, rare coral rag forest exploration and primate surveys including Angolan Black and White monkeys. No experience is necessary as the GVI training program will provide a baseline and holistic understanding of all aspects of the area and project work.

MPI Research

You will be conducting pre-clinical research that will help aid in bringing safer, healthier products to the world. You will be responsible for the administration of test materials via various routes (oral, dermal, IV, subcu, IP, IM), measuring body weights & food consumption, collecting blood samples, and performing detailed observations with a variety of animal species varying from mice to non-human primates.

Internships Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Internship students must be highly motivated, responsible individuals who are able to work in a professional laboratory environment.
  • Must be able to commit 12 hours per week (4 hours 3 days a week, Monday-Friday) from September through May.
  • Ideally looking for second-semester juniors or seniors close to graduation.
  • Must be able to commit at least 8 months (September-May) to 1 year to the program.
  • Must be able to commit 40 hours per week in the summer months (May-August).
  • Must undergo a physical exam, TB test, and drug screen.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana

Plant propagation, identification and natural areas restoration are just some of the projects you'll be involved in at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The Lakeshore is more than just a shore. Located on Lake Michigan, an hour east of the Chicago, you'll find dunes, beaches, bogs, marshes, prairie remnants, oak savanna, woodland, forest and historic buildings. Approximately 118 acres of former farm fields identified for prairie restoration are dominated by non-native, low quality aggressive and woody vegetation.     Responsibilities include: actively work with Resource Management Staff to improve impacted areas (conduct exotic vegetation control, remove excessive woody vegetation, collect seed propagating plants, prepare and plant restoration areas and maintain seed production nurseries, 75%; log and compile project data, and electronically map work completed, 25%. Position runs 4/19/2005 to 1/17/2006. Position Code: IDNL23-2.

Research Experience For Undergraduates(REU)

The Biological Sciences and Chemistry Departments of WMU have a National Science Foundation funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program IN Environmental Signal Transduction. This is a program that allows undergraduates from WMU, and from colleges and universities from around the country to participate in Interdisciplinary Research in Environmental Signal Transduction. The REU experience at Western Michigan University includes: Participation in a research project; Presentation/discussion series on the process of science; Considerations of scientific ethics and integrity; Research seminars and career oriented discussions.
