The Center for Excellence in Simulation Research is a grant project funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation — Tri-Corridor. Our proposal outlines a multi-disciplinary project to characterize behavioral skills of highly effective healthcare team members. The employed methodology is informed by work done in creating the Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) within the airline industry. In both domains human performance, strongly influenced by context, often determines outcomes of complex, high-stakes activities. Fifty years of aviation experience in simulation training has identified the tools of a third dimension, beyond cognitive knowledge and technical skills that must be trained. The work product will create foundation science for analogous simulation-based skills development for healthcare workers that recognize and enhance the synergisms available from team functioning.
