Computer


1. Can I get training on how to use my computer or its programs?
Yes. Please submit a Service Request and we will be happy to do either one-on-one training, or group training. (We are not able to provide training on all programs)



2. Everything on my screen looks to big/small, how do I change that?
To change the size of everything on you computer please:

    1. Right-click anywhere on your Desktop
    2. Select “Properties”
    3. Select the “Settings” tab
    4. Adjust the “Screen resolution” bar and select “Apply”
    5. If this does the opposite of what you would like, adjust the “Screen resolution” bar in the opposite direction and select “Apply”



3. How do I add a shortcut (link to a file) to my desktop?

    1. Locate the file you would like to create a shortcut to (do not open the file)
    2. Right-click the file
    3. Move your mouse over “Send To”
    4. Select “Desktop (create shortcut)”



4. How do I add a site I want to visit again to my favorites?

    1. Go to the website you would like to save to your favorites
    2. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key, then press the “D” key

       or

    1. Go to the website you would like to save to your favorites
    2. Click the “Favorites”menu
    3. Select “Add to Favorites”
    4. Click “OK”



5. How do I get support on my BroncoNET ID?
Unfortunately AE Computer Services is unable to provide support on BroncoNET IDs. Please visit the BroncoNET ID page on the Office of Information Technology website for support.




6. How do I get to my GroupWise e-mail outside of work?
You may use the online version or download GroupWise to your home computer. Please go to the GroupWise page for access to both methods.




7. How do I go about getting new/updated programs?
Some programs can be added/updated by the Computer Services team with no additional approvals. However some programs that will require approval. Please submit a Service Request for any questions regarding new/updated programs.




8. I’m having trouble logging into a program, what can I do?
Please do the following:

  • Check your username
  • Check your password
  • Check that the “Caps Lock” is turned off
  • Ask if others in your area are able to access that program.
  • Try logging in again



9. My computer sometimes “freezes”, what can I do when this happens?
Please try doing the following steps:

    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
    2. Click “Task List”
    3. Click on the “Applications” tab
    4. Under the status column, if anything says not responding click it and then click on “End Task”

If this does not solve your issue please turn the computer off by holding down the power button on the front of the PC (Tower) for 10-15 seconds. You may then turn the computer back on.




10. What are common keyboard shortcuts (key combinations) I can use?
Windows has many great keyboard shortcuts you can use to speed up doing common actions. Please visit the keyboard shortcuts list page for many of them.
  For Example: Ctrl + C = Copy  |  Ctrl + X = Paste




11. Why do I have two of the same icons on my desktop?
Some programs are installed on your PC, while others are being generated by Novell. The icons with a red arrow are Novell icons that cannot be removed. If you notice two identical icons, please delete the icon with a black arrow.





Printer


12. My printer has a paper jam. How do I fix it?
Please try doing the following steps:

    1. Turn off/unplug the printer
    2. Open any trays/covers to expose the jammed paper
    3. Remove the paper slowly to keep it from ripping
    4. Turn the printer back on (may need to plug it back in)
    5. Try reprinting your file



13. When I print it goes to the wrong printer. How do I change my default printer?

    1. Click “Start”
    2. Click “Settings”
    3. Clic “Printers and Faxes”
    4. Right-click the printer you would like to be default
    5. Select “Set as Default Printer”



Network


14. How can I tell if there are network issues?
You will not be able to do one of the following:
  • Login on to your computer
  • Access your Home or Share drive
  • Common icons will be missing from your desktop



15. How do I register my new wireless device to use WMU’s wireless internet?
Using the wireless internet at WMU can sometimes be tricky. You must first register your computer/device with WMU before you are allowed to use the internet. To register the device yourself please visit the wireless registration page for directions.




16. Who do I contact if I need a new network or phone connection?
You may directly contact Telecom at 387-4663, or you may submit a Service Request.
