Prairie Seeding Mix:

In 2001, in an effort to restore the native prairie, seeding mix was spread.

New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus)

White False Indigo (Baptisia lactaea)

Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)

Heart-leaved Golden Alexanders (Zizia aptera)

Rough Blazingstar (Liatris aspera)

Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea)

Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida)

Dotted Mint (Monarda punctata)

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)

New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae)

Invasive Species:

Asylum Lake Property unfortunately contains invasive plant species.

These invasive species include:

 

HERBACEOUS WEEDS:

Bull Thistle, Cirsium vulgare

Canada Thistle, Cirsium arvense

Curly Dock, Rumex crispus

Spotted Knapweed, Centaurea maculosa

Crown Vetch, Coronilla varia (Still intentionally planted as a slope-stabilizer)

Purple Loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria

Japanese Knotweed, Polygonum japonicum

Garlic Mustard, Alliaria officinalis (petiolata)

Mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris

Horseweed, Conyza (Erigeron) canadensis

 

GRASSES AND REEDS:

Giant Reed, Phragmites australis (A problem at the inlet to Asylum Lake, East of Drake)

Quack Grass, Agropyron repens

Timothy, Phleum pratensis

Kentucky Bluegrass, Poa pratensis (the same one we plant as turfgrass)

Brome Grasses, Bromus inermis, japonicus, etc.

 

WEEDY TREES:

Box Elder, Acer negundo (Native, but a problem in our woodlands)

Black Locust, Robinia pseudoacacia

Norway Maple, Acer negundo (These are still offered by nurseries and planted in landscapes)

Russian Olive, Eleagnus angustifolia

Siberian Elm, Ulmus pumila

 

INVASIVE WOODY SHRUBS:

Japanese Barberry, Berberis thunbergii

Common Privet, Ligustrum vulgare

Honeysuckles, Lonicera maackii, L. tatarica et. al.

Common Buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica

Multiflora Rose, Rosa multiflora
