Tammi Smith is an assistant director of advising and the coordinating pre-health advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University.
She has been at WMU since 1992, first as an undergraduate student then as a graduate student. In 1999 she was hired to be the Department of Biological Sciences undergraduate advisor, a position she held for nine years. In 2008, she moved over to the College of Arts and Sciences advising office.
Smith finds that even though she has a highly scientific background, she enjoys advising. It was a career she knew nothing about ahead of time, but it turned out to be perfect for her. She encourages students to try out new things, too, as you never know when something is going to spark your passion and creativity.
Her hobbies include reading sci-fi, mysteries, and thrillers; refining her cooking and baking techniques (often for the benefit of my work colleagues); traveling; and lately, competing in 5 K’s.
