Mary-Louise Totton

Mary-Louise Totton teaches classes on a variety of Asian-Pacific topics, including Asian Adornments, Arts of South and Southeast Asia, Oceanic Art, Narrative Arts of Asia, and Western perceptions of Visual Cultures in Asia-Pacific.  Her research focuses on architectural ornamentation and personal adornment arts of Indonesia.  She has developed a study abroad program in Java in which students conduct fieldwork studies at early monuments, as well as participate in studio classes with contemporary artists.  She has curated numerous exhibitions of South and Southeast Asian art, and has most recently organized and authored an exhibit for the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College titled, Wearing Wealth and Styling Identity: Tapis from Lampung, South Sumatra, Indonesia (2009).  She is a Fulbright fellow alumna (Indonesia) and has sponsored artists from Indonesia through the Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence program.
