In 1991 then President Deither Haenicke had the vision that gave birth to the Western Michigan University Sculpture Tour. In turn many others have contributed their support.
It was my distinct privilege to establish this program 15 years ago, and for me to have the opportunity to work with hundreds of artists, students, faculty and interested volunteers since then.
The learning environment this program has fostered has been rewarding and multi-faceted. Over time the campus landscape has been invigorated by substantive encounters with a variety of artistic forms, ambitions and influences that sometimes challenge our thinking.
These attributes have also established a point of identity for our campus well beyond Kalamazoo and the immediate region.
New leadership, and new supporting venues with the Richmond Center for Visual Arts, hold great promise of transforming the Western Michigan University Sculpture Tour to even greater levels.
