Throughout the exhibition, various forms of printmaking are explored using variances of intensity, in relation to noise.  Unlike audible noise, visual noise refers directly to how one perceives volume by means of visual information.  The exhibit is organized using the gallery specifically for its visual silence as a backdrop for each print and for the prints in relation to one another.

Natural variances such as the trough and crest of a sound wave actively influence the placement of work, as the louder pieces are clustered together, leaving the softer, subtler works farther away from one another.  Through this specific placement, the relationship of noise is examined, featuring Sol LeWitt’s Untitled (Fifty small dots…) as a static baseline between softer and louder pieces.  Wanda Sky’s Exhuming the Mastodon featured on the outskirts of the arrangement, is a subtle almost invisible print, in comparison to Eduardo Palazzo’s bold graphic placement of information and symbols.

Taken as a whole, the exhibit highlights the range within printmaking techniques by examining the impact of a single mark.  The arrangement strives to appreciate each mark as both an individual noise and collectively as a whole.  As students interested in communicating our own ideas through print, this exhibition allowed us to collaborate by exploring the interpretation of works and arranging them in a visual composition that may at best, be described as visual noise.
