(DEARTS) Course Objectives

• To better understand the cultural worlds in which we live and participate.

• To examine ethical, moral, social and political issues that confront us today viewed through historical and contemporary art forms.

• To develop the above world view by nurturing awareness and comprehension of the arts, including the language and history of contemporary and historical arts.

• To enhance critical thinking skills.

• To develop new means to appreciate and to participate in the arts.

• To learn what motivates artists to create and become knowledgeable of the artist’s methodologies.

• To demonstrate how the arts function as the means to enhance learning about other areas of human creativity including: religion, science, business, education, psychology, etc.

• To gain an understanding of how the arts are an essential part of a healthy, democratic society and to examine issues of freedom of expression and censorship.

• To gain an understanding of the economics of the art world and of being an artist.
