Transfer Application Instructions

students

Take a few minutes to read all of the following information before applying online. The small amount of time you take now to read and understand these instructions will ensure that you avoid processing delays while awaiting our decision.

Admissions criteria

All applicants must have an official college transcript sent from each institution attended. Applicants with at least a 2.00 (C) grade point average (as computed by WMU) in transferable course credits will be considered for admission. Courses completed as well as the trend of the most recent grades will also be taken into account. If you have completed less than 26 semester hours (39 quarter/term hours) at the time of application you must also submit either:

  • An official high school transcript.
  • ACT or SAT scores (unless at least two years have elapsed between high school graduation and your requested WMU entry date)
    or an official GED score.

When you may apply

You should apply a minimum of six months prior to the semester you plan to enroll (e.g., apply in January for fall). Applications for the fall semester are due August 1.

Social security information

Enter your name as it appears on your social security card. The social security number is required to apply for federal tax credits, financial aid, and/or campus employment and reporting purposes. You will be assigned a student ID number upon admission.

Residency

WMU may request additional documentation to verify an applicant's residency status. For more information, see residency policy.

Your intended major

You may be placed in a pre-curriculum or major (e.g., Pre-Aviation, Pre-Communication) at the time of admission if the program you are selecting has additional requirements for admission to be met after enrollment at the University.

If you are undecided on your major, you may choose University Curriculum, a program for students who wish to explore options before choosing a specific major. Please note that a coordinate major (a major taken in conjunction with another major) may not be selected at the time of admission. If you choose to elect a coordinate major, you will do so after you enroll.

Payment of your application fee

The nonrefundable $40 application fee must be paid online via credit card or by electronic check. Payments are processed by a secure server.

Providing your transcripts

You must request that all colleges you have attended send an official transcript directly to Admissions. If you have completed fewer than 26 transferable semester hours (39 quarter hours), your high school transcript must also must be sent, as well as ACT or SAT scores (unless at least two years have elapsed between high school graduation and your requested WMU entry date). GED diploma applicants are required to submit GED scores, not ACT or SAT scores and official scores can be requested from the State Board of Education.

Transcripts can be directed to admissions-transcripts@wmich.edu

Email address

An email address is required on the application because it allows a simple and convenient way to contact you during the application process—after admission, the University provides all students with a WMU email address which is used for important correspondence. If you do not have an email address, you can obtain a free account online for this purpose, or you can print and use the paper application. Keep in mind that using a paper application could cause a longer delay in processing time.

Checking your work and errors

The application uses a checklist to help you keep track of your progress during completion. After you submit the application you cannot return to change entries, so check your work carefully. If you find you've made an error afterwards, email admissions-info@wmich.edu or call (269) 387-2000 to request us to make the correction. In any case, do not submit a second application! This includes a change of entry date. We request that the student complete the application and that it not be entered by others, which helps avoid mistakes and delays.
