Central Office

The WMU Apartments office is responsible for daily business operations, assignment and leasing activity, coordination of maintenance/cleaning/delivery/landscaping services, enforcement of policies and procedures, and community development.

Resident Managers

Each complex has an resident manager who can help you with questions about moving in and out, the apartment and complex, the University and the Kalamazoo community. They oversee activity within the complex and often act as a liaison between the residents and WMU Apartments office. Their student and family responsibilities sometimes require them to be out of the area, and therefore they cannot always be reached. They do have voice mail service and you can leave a message at the number listed below. Please don't call them after 8 p.m. or before 8 a.m. The apartment number and phone number for each apartment supervisor is as follows:

Elmwood Complex Buildings A–H Apt A-6 387-6498
Elmwood Complex Buildings J–Q Apt Q-12 387-6916
Goldsworth Valley Complex Entire Complex Apt S-20 387-6499
Stadium Drive Complex Apts 253–300, 501–554 Apt 268 387-7495

Keys and Locks

You are issued at least one key when you sign your lease. Families generally receive two keys. Single students each receive one key. Extra keys for family members are available from the office. Each key opens the main apartment door and mailbox. Keys are numbered with the apartment number and a key number (from 1–4). When you move out, the same number of keys with the same key numbers must be returned as were issued.

When single students are transferring/switching apartments they are sometimes tempted to exchange keys with the outgoing roommate instead of turning them into the office. However, this is not the proper procedure. All keys must be returned and picked up at the office.

If you lose a key, both the apartment and mailbox locks are changed, new keys are issued and you will be charged to cover the replacement cost. (Locks are also changed and the fee is assessed if all keys are not returned when the apartment is vacated.) You may not install your own locks or dead bolts on the main apartment door or on individual bedroom doors.

Lockouts

You may find yourself in the unfortunate position of being locked out of your apartment. For assistance during normal business hours call the resident manager. If he/she is not available come to the WMU Apartments Office and borrow a spare key. On weekends and after 8:00 p.m. contact WMU Public Safety at 387-5555.

For your protection, identification such as name, social security number, birth dates, etc., is required for assistance. We do not unlock doors for children. Only those adults listed on your lease will be assisted.

Resident Parking

All motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.) must be registered and parked in a lot designated by the permit. The permit is free when you register your vehicle at Parking Services during regular business hours, 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and can be used only for your particular apartment complex. They will require your identification, State-issued vehicle registration and apartment lease. Only residents listed on the lease are eligible for a permit.

In the Goldsworth Valley area, each apartment has an assigned parking place. Second and third cars must be parked in lot #77, at the end of building "R."

Self Paint Program

A "self-paint" program is available if you wish to paint your apartment walls. The university provides all paint, rollers, brushes, etc. Since WMU is not able to paint all vacant apartments, it is possible an apartment may need painting when you move in.

Please note: You must make necessary arrangements through the WMU Apartments Office prior to painting.

Laundry Facilities

Laundry rooms with coin-and laundry-card-operated washers and dryers are centrally located throughout the apartment system. Since laundry rooms are community facilities their cleanliness is primarily your and your fellow resident's responsibility. The laundry rooms are located:

Elmwood Complex

In the center of each building. The laundry may be found on either the upper or lower level depending on the building.

Goldsworth Valley Complex

North end of buildings "R," "T," and "X."

Stadium Drive Complex

Laundry room is located in apartment 538.

Storage Areas

Storage areas are a shared space for WMU Apartment residents for small items such as boxes of seasonal clothing. They are NOT designed to store furniture, automobile tires, or other large items. In order to provide an organized, clean storage area, as well as to improve security for items in storage rooms, the rooms are accessible only through the resident manager (from 8 a.m.–8 p.m.) or the WMU Apartments Office (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). Identification stickers, indicating your name, apartment number and date you are placing items in storage are also available when you check out the key to your storage area.
