Moving Out

[Giving Notice] [Cleaning to Vacate] [Final Inspection] [Keys]

Giving advance notice (at least 35 days before the date your lease expires), conducting a pre-vacate inspection with your apartment supervisor, thoroughly cleaning your apartment, and returning your apartment keys on the listed vacate date are the essential elements for properly vacating your apartment.

Giving Notice

As soon as we know you are moving, your apartment requires an inspection to determine how much time is needed for painting, carpet replacement or any other long-term maintenance work required before your apartment can be reassigned to the next resident. This Pre-Vacate Inspection is required within one week of the date you turn in your Notice to Vacate, which notifies the WMU Apartments Office that you are leaving.

If you wish to be present during this inspection, you will need to contact your resident manager and schedule a time during that week. If you do not contact your manager, he/she will enter your apartment and complete the Pre-Vacate Inspection according to his/her schedule.

Even if you are unable to coordinate a time to be present for the Pre-Vacate Inspection, you will still want to contact your manager to arrange a time to meet before you are ready to move. He/she can assist you with helpful guidelines as to what or how well you are expected to clean and even provide you with some free cleaning products.

If you notify us that you are vacating after the 35-day deadline, but before the lease actually begins, you will be subject to a 30-day penalty fee which begins the first day of the new lease. Giving notice after the new lease period begins makes you financially responsible for the entire semester.

Cleaning to Vacate

Before your final inspection, all belongings must be moved out and the apartment thoroughly cleaned. Cleaning fees will be assessed if the apartment is not cleaned.

Final Inspection

Your resident manager completes the final inspection once your belongings are completely removed from your apartment and you are ready to turn in your keys. If you would like to be present for this final inspection, you will need to schedule an appointment at least one week in advance with your resident manager.

During the final inspection of your apartment, the move-out checklist will be compared with the move-in checklist. An itemized list of damages and the estimated costs of repair will be mailed to you within thirty days. Any disputes about the damage list must be received within seven days of damage notification.

Keys

You are considered to be in possession of your apartment and are responsible for rent and/or late fees until the keys are returned to either the WMU Apartments Office, to your resident manager, or placed in the drop-box outside Faunce Student Services Building.

Anything left in the apartment or storage areas after you move out will be considered abandoned. Items of value will be held for 30 days and, if not claimed, will be either disposed of or sold at auction.
