Programs of Graduate Study

The Anthropology Department at WMU offers the MA degree to students interested in any (or all) of three subdisciplines in anthropology: archaeology, cultural anthrolopology, and biological anthropology. Our faculty have a diverse set of research and teaching interests within the broad confines of Anthropology as a discipline. Particular strengths and interests of our faculty include skeletal biology, historic archaeology, medical anthropology, and globalization studies.

Students may elect to take a "Thesis Track" or "Non-Thesis Track", neither of which requires the taking of comprehensive exams.


MA in Anthropology: Thesis Track

Requirements for the MA in Anthropology with Thesis include:

  • 36 credit hours : (10 class + 6 hours thesis credit)
  • 4 Seminars (Anth 601, 602, 603, 604)
  • Research Methods (Anth 530)
  • 6 hours of thesis credit (700)
  • MA thesis
  • Oral presentation of thesis results to department

MA in Anthropology: Non-Thesis Track

Requirements for the MA in Anthropology without Thesis include:

  • 36 credit hours (10 classes + 6 hours Internship)
  • 4 Seminars (Anth 601, 602, 603, 604)
  • 6 hours of Internship or Practicum (Anth 699)
  • Paper based on Internship or Practicum
  • Oral presentation of practicum results to department
