- The Robert F. Maher Scholarship is awarded annually to one or more graduating seniors or graduate students in Anthropology who demonstrate outstanding ability and promise for the future. Winners of the award are determined by the faculty of the Anthropology Department. The awards are announced at an awards ceremony which takes place in April. The award was established in honor of Robert F. Maher who taught at the University for thirty years, and who was the founder and first chair of the Anthropology Department.
- Teaching Assistantships ranging between $12,500 and $18,000 per year are available on a competitive basis to graduate students in Anthropology. We currently support 13 graduate students as teaching assistants, typically for a period of two years. All entering students are automatically considered for teaching assistantships as part of the admissions process, with the stipulation that completed graduate applications must be received in the Department by Feb 1. Returning students must submit a letter of application and a CV in order to be considered for a TA: all graduate assistantships require graduate status in good standing, with less than 2 years in our Masters Program. Selections and assignments will be made by a vote of departmental faculty based on academic excellence and, where appilcable, strong previous performance as a teaching assistant. The following courses typically have teaching assistants: Anth 1200 (Peoples of the World), Anth 1500 (Race, Biology and Culture), Anth 2100 (Introduction to Archaeology), Anth 2400 (Principles of Cultural Anthropology), Anth 2500 (Introduction to Biological Anthropology), Anth 3390 (Cultures of Latin America), Anth 3410 (Cultures of Africa), Anth 3420 (Cultures of the Middle East), Anth 3440 (First Americans), and Anth 4900 (Field School). Students interested in positions with the summer field school in archaeology (Anth 4900) should submit an additional application for that position.
