Regional focus: Xinjiang Province, China; Mongolia; Central Asia

A closer look: Janet Abbey is an archaeologist whose research focuses the political structure of the Xiongnu nomadic tribal confederation. Her interests include nomadism of the Altai region of Central Asia, Uighur culture and how the ethnic identities of the peoples that populate eastern Silk Road developed, Her previous fieldwork includes a field school in Xi'an, China and research work in Urumqi and Turpan, China.
