One Alumni Mentor, Gina "was working for a non-profit organization which I have always been interested in. She explained to me that in working for a non-profit organization you will most likely have to accept a lower salary than you would want though at the end of the day if you are happy and proud of what you do it is well worth it. She also told me that she gets chances to travel and also has great benefits which can be found in most non-profit organizations. Gina told me that DC is the place to go to work for a non-profit org, because almost all of them have a head quarter there, and there are many young professionals in DC that the night life is really fun."
Another
Alumni Mentor, Troy said "to consider financial advising. I love
math and helping others and not till I got the chance to talk to him
did I realize how gratifying being a financial advisor could be. Troy
told me that it is a great feeling to know that you are helping a
young couple mortgage their first house or send some client's child
to college. When he said this I thought wow that sounds like something
that I would love to do. We also talked about majors and I told him
how I felt that a major restricts me on what I can be and do in the
future and that is why I have not really declared anything and he
explained to me that the guy next to him majored in Psychology and
that had not stopped him from becoming an advisor."
"I am glad that Western has this program and even though I was a little hesitant to use it I am very happy that I did since I got the chance to speak with some awesome people."
"I
was skeptical to try the Mentor Program because I had such a strange
combination of majors: german and marketing. So when I searched, I
simply tried marketing. There were results, and as I looked more closely
at each Alumni Mentor, I was shocked to discover that there was an
alum with my exact same majors who had also studied in Munich!
I immediately contacted Stefan, asking general questions about how
he was able to get over to Munich, how his German major had helped
in his career, etc. Within a few hours I received a response! Stefan
had written me, explaining everything that had helped him along the
way. He gave me more names of people to talk to, not only at Western,
but also other universities who could help me with study abroad opportunities.
He encouraged me to continue with my German, because it had allowed
him to have so many great experiances.
He also helped to reconfirm my choice of marketing as a major. Through his explanation of experiences, I was able to see myself doing the same type of work! Overall, Mr. Haney was a huge help to me and I would highly recommend every student to check out the mentor program!"
