Pentastar Aviation donates equipment to WMU

Alumnus receives honorary degree
WMU has granted an honorary doctor of laws degree to the official biographer of the Dalai Lama. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to science and humankind at large, Tibet native Ngawangthondup Narkyid (pictured with Dr. John Dunn) received the degree during an alumni event in Poway, Calif. More

WMU doctoral student on Oprah
Tererai Trent, a doctoral student in WMU's interdisciplinary Ph.D. in evaluation was recently a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Trent was celebrated as "the woman who went 10,000 miles to make her dreams come true. More



College of Education renamed
During its Sept. 17 meeting, Western Michigan University's Board of Trustees approved changing the name of the College of Education to the College of Education and Human Development. More

WMU student named MAC runner of the week
WMU cross country runner Samantha Tomerlin was named Mid-American Conference Cross Country Runner of the Week after leading the Broncos to a first place finish among Division I schools at the Michigan Intercollegiates. More

Former WMU alumni director dies
Russell A. Strong, M.A. ’59, who served as WMU’s alumni director from 1979-1983, died Oct. 2 in North Carolina at the age of 85.  Strong retired from the University in 1988 after working a total of 20 years during two separate periods.  Strong was director of news and information at WMU from 1951-63 and director of alumni and development research from 1983 until his retirement. Strong's obituary may be found online, here.

WMU has offered extension classes since 1905; six regional sites provide primarily graduate and professional education; the first online classes were introduced in 2000 and now nearly 140 classes are offered online each year; Extended University Programs serves over 4,000 students each semester at branch campuses or online; it accounts for more than half of the graduate enrollments at WMU and the general university studies bachelor's degree program graduates 90 students per year.
