Professor's vehicle runs on wind energy
WMU Professor John Patten may have the first Toyota Prius converted to a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. A $10,000 grant from WMU and the state allowed him to retrofit the car with a battery system allowing it to run on electric power for 30 to 40 miles before returning to hybrid mode. More

Celebrated WMU track and field coach dies
John "Jack" F. Shaw, celebrated Western Michigan University track and field coach for 32 years, died Friday, Jan. 9 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. "Jack was always dedicated to the University and the success of WMU student athletes...He was truly a championship coach," says WMU Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard. More
