Board of Directors
Association Governance
The Alumni Association is governed by alumni
volunteer leaders who comprise the board of directors. Twenty-one directors
are elected to a three-year term, and three are appointed by the University's
president.
Members of the board of directors are chosen because of their willingness
and potential to work together to serve the best interest of the entire University, fellow alumni,
and current and potential students. Often a board member is chosen because of a specific skill
that is needed by the University or the Alumni Association.
Expectations of Directors
- Each director must be a member of the WMU Alumni Association.
- Each director is expected to attend two meetings of the board each year. The fall meeting is held
the Friday before Homecoming, and the spring meeting is traditionally scheduled on the last Friday
in April. Both are held on the University's Kalamazoo campus.
- Each director is expected to serve on at least one standing committee of the board. Committee
meetings are held throughout the year via conference telephone calls.
Responsibilities of Directors
- Establishing Alumni Association policy.
- Assisting in long-range and strategic planning by developing and implementing programs which are
in keeping with the association's goals and by providing evaluation of existing programs.
- Promoting the University and its Alumni Association by encouraging fellow alumni to join the association
and to participate in its programs.
- Supporting local alumni events and maintain familiarity with views of other alumni, collectively
and individually.
- Monitoring the financial affairs of the association
- Recruiting outstanding prospective students for WMU, informally among friends, or formally as
an Alumni Admissions Ambassador.
