Major

Interdiciplinary Major

We offer an interdisciplinary undergraduate baccalaureate degree program with two emphases/tracks: (1) Black Americana Studies and (2) African Studies. The major is a concentration of 36 credit hours in work from required core courses and a combination of approved electives. Both emphases/tracks include a language requirement that emphasize the importance of foreign language study (beyond the 1001-level). Students in the African Studies track are strongly encouraged to look into the study abroad opportunities available the Haenicke Institute for International and Area Studies. Student majors satisfy Proficiency 2, Baccalaureate-level writing requirement by successfully completing AFS 3800.

Black Americana Studies Track Option:
36 hours

2. Foreign language/foreign study requirement (3-8 hrs):

This requirement can be met in one of two ways: by earning foreign language credit through foreign study (INTL 3300-3310) or by taking at least one course beyond the 101-level in any foreign language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese recommended).

3. Electives (sufficient to bring major total to 36 hours)

Other elective courses that focus on the African American experience must be approved by the Africana Studies advisor.
