INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR
We offer an interdisciplinary undergraduate baccalaureate
degree program with two emphases/tracks: (1) Black Studies
and (2) African Studies. The major is a concentration of 36
credit hours in work from required core courses and a combination
of approved electives. Both emphases/tracks include a language
requirement that emphasize the importance of foreign language
study (beyond the 101-level). Students in the African Studies
track are strongly encouraged to look into the study abroad
opportunities available through in Africana Studies Program
and/or the Haenicke Institute for International and Area Studies.
Student majors satisfy Proficiency 2, Baccalaureate-level
writing requirement by successfully completing AFS 380.

2. Foreign language/foreign study
requirement (3-8 hrs):
This requirement can be met in one of two ways: by earning
foreign language credit through foreign study (A-S 330-331)
or by taking at least one course beyond the 101-level in any
foreign language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese recommended).
3. Electives (sufficient to bring major total to 36 hours)
Elective courses must focus on the African American
experience and be approved by the Africana Studies advisor from among
courses offered at WMU by the Africana Studies faculty or appropriate
courses in other departments.
