We
have had great success during this past
year and we are expecting an extremely
capable and expanded freshman class
for fall 2011. It’s looking like
fall will bring with it 26+ academically
talented new students! This is gratifying,
and a significant improvement over last
year.
The demand for our co-ops interns and
graduates continues to exceed availability.
We appreciate the support of all of
the corporations that make this possible.
Our students make excellent contributions
in these capacities and enhance their
resumes and experiences. Each year,
we marvel at the impact |
|
| these
experiences have on the students’
commitment to the industry as well as their
personal development and maturity.
The dedicated efforts of Dr. Nicholas Triantafillopoulos,
John Kerr and Chuck Klass are continuing
to create the Dr. Raymond L. Janes Memorial
scholarship endowment. Our alumni have responded
positively and the endowment fund continues
to grow. If you haven’t contributed
to this endowment but wish to recognize
the contribution Ray made to your career
by challenging and coaching; please put
this upper most on your action list. It
will create recognition Ray deserves.
Our endowment to support graduate studies
has developed to the level where we can
again fund some excellent student research
at the Master’s and Doctorate level.
The Education and Research Committee reviewed
three proposals this April and agreed to
fund portions of each. The balance will
be funded through partial corporate sponsorship.
This year we are planning to visit alumni
in Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Washington.
We hope you can take the time to meet with
us. |

Ts’ai
Lun Officers hold largest WMU blood drive
to date |
 |
| Ts'ai
Lun, the TAPPI student chapter of WMU's
Paper Engineering program, held the fourth
annual Red Cross Blood drive this spring.
The Red Cross successfully collected 79
pints in the six hour blood drive held
at WMU’s Engineering and Applied
Sciences campus Friday, April 8 in honor
of 4-year-old Gideon Schripsema. Schripsema,
whose special connection to the Bronco
hockey team has generated headlines, was
the personal link in this year’s
drive. Because of the courageous story
of young Gideon, the entire football and
hockey teams attended the drive. Schripsema

a shining star to all and is a wholehearted
example of perseverance in a time of trouble.
Ts’ai Lun officers felt honored and privileged
to have had the tremendous outpouring of support
which will not only help save lives from the
blood collected but the outstanding efforts
clearly indicated the true Bronco spirit. Because
a pint of blood is processed into three components,
WMU students, faculty and the wonderful community
of Kalamazoo have provided enough to save or
sustain the lives of 237 individuals. Well done
Ts’ai Lun officers and student members! |

PTF
Trustees met this April for the annual
spring meeting, but this year’s
board meeting kicked off a bit earlier
in the day with a new opportunity designed
for students and board members to further
interact. “Muffins with Mentors”
met with great success as students stopped
by for a chance to meet and mingle before
hitting their classes for the day. Many
thanks to our board members for their

Seniors
present during poster session |
|
At
the April Board Meeting, our seniors had
an opportunity to present a showcase of
their senior engineering design projects.
Board members and students enjoyed this
excellent opportunity to network and share
their research findings.
Featured projects were presented by seven
of our senior-level paper engineering
major and minor students and included
the following topics: "Economic evaluation
of cogeneration operation; impact of residual
ash on the liner ply for gypsum wallboard;"
"Waste water recovery from a recycled
board mill;" "The effects of

of recycled fiber;" "A comparative
study of the xenon and thermal drying of conductive
silver inks;" and "HDPE adhesion optimization."
The PTF board members, along with PCI faculty,
were able to ‘learn’ from our students
during this session. Overheard comments included,
“this is an outstanding array of work
and talent,” and, “I just wish we
had more time to hear more from the students!”
Future sessions will be extended as our senior
classes continue to grow. |

This
past January, 15 students were supported
by PTF and PCI to attend the TAPPI
annual Student Summit, hosted by
Domtar, and their Kingsport, TN
mill. The first session kicked-off
with a keynote on “New Directions,”
delivered by Mike Edwards, Domtar

Senior
VP, Pulp and Paper, and was followed
by three days of presentations on industry-insider
tips, new technologies and production
advancements, networking opportunities,
TAPPI division updates, and nationwide
student socializing events.
Industry recruiters also participated
and interviewed our WMU students for
summer internship and co-op opportunities.
Feedback provided to our student recruiter
was excellent—our students are
very well prepared and were extremely
professional and polished in their interviews!
Several were offered summer positions
as a result. |

Paper
Engineering senior Casey Kick receives
honors, awards |
 |
 |
| Casey
Kick; senior, double
major in Paper Engineering
and Chemical Engineering |
|
|
|
 |
Each
year, faculty members from across the
University select the most outstanding
senior in their various academic schools,
departments and programs to represent
their units as a WMU Presidential Scholar.
The designation is the highest academic
honor that WMU can bestow on its undergraduates.
Selection is based on the students' general
academic excellence, academic and/or artistic
excellence in their majors, and intellectual
and/or artistic promise. Forty-five students
were recognized as Western Michigan University's
top seniors for 2011 during the 31st annual
Presidential Scholars Convocation on March
24. We are proud to announce that Casey
Kick was selected as the Presidential
Scholar from the Paper Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, and Imaging department programs.
Additionally in April, twenty-three Western
Michigan University students received
Undergraduate Research Excellence Awards
from the Office of the Vice President
for Research. Casey, who is double majoring
in Paper Engineering and Chemical Engineering,
was one of the 23 award recipients. Casey
received a grant to study "Enhancing
Algae Absorption onto Pulp Fibers"
with faculty mentor Dr. Raja Aravamuthan.
Furthermore, Casey was recognized in April
as a 2011 CEAS Outstanding Senior. The
Award recognizes students for their exceptional
achievement in their individual fields
of study. Dr. Tony Vizzini, Dean of CEAS,
sponsored the awards ceremony for the
seniors with the highest grade point average.
As part of the ceremony, the seniors were
presented with plaques reflecting their
accomplishment.
Congratulations Casey! |
