Military credit

If you served in the military, you will need to submit a copy of your Department of Defense Form 214 to WMU's Office of Admissions for review. Some types of military training can be transferred to the University for course credit. Also, if you've taken any courses through another college or university, send official copies of each transcript to admissions for evaluation. Once your credits have been reviewed, you'll receive a copy of your evaluation. The typical turnaround for this is four to six weeks. Keep this copy with you -- you will need it when meeting with your academic advisor.

  • Soldiers, reservists, veterans and members of the Army National Guard: Obtain transcripts online or by calling (866) 297-4427. American Council on Education transcript and DD214 are required for credit evaluation.
  • Navy, Marines and veterans: Obtain transcripts online or by calling (877) 253-7122. Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript and DD214 are required for credit evaluation.
  • Active Air Force duty, Air National Guard and reservists: Obtain transcripts online. Community College of the Air Force transcript and DD214 are required for credit evaluation.
  • Activty duty Coast Guard and veterans: Obtain transcripts online. Coast Guard Institute transcript and DD214 are required for credit evaluation.

Admission to WMU

If you are a new student to WMU, or it has been a year or more since you attended classes here, you will need to fill out an application. Submit your application online through WMU's Office of Admissions.

Transfer work

If you attended another college or university, you will need to have all of your official transcripts sent to WMU's Office of Admissions. Once your credits have been reviewed, you'll receive a copy of your evaluation. The typical turnaround for this is four to six weeks. Keep this copy with you -- you will need it when meeting with your academic advisor.

Michigan community college transfer guides and transfer credits

You can check your Michigan Community College transfer credits online by visiting WMU's Michigan community college transfer guides page for general education approved course work. Visit WMU's transfer credit equivalencies to determine which of your courses will transfer.

Academic advising

All students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor on a regular basis. This is especially important for transfer and military students. You may have more than one advisor depending on your area of study. Make sure you bring an official copy of your transfer credit evaluation with you each time you meet with your advisor. If you don't have your credit evaluation, bring copies of your transcripts with you.

If you are still taking courses somewhere else, and these credits have not yet been transferred to WMU, make sure you have the course information with you, including the course number, title, and name of the college or university. Advisors will review your transfer work and military credits to determine how any course you have taken will transfer to WMU.

Visit our academic advising page for a list of WMU's academic colleges and advising offices.

Financial aid

Visit WMU's Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships for information on financial aid and submitting the necessary paperwork. Once you have submitted your paperwork, be sure to check your student e-mail account through GoWMU on a regular basis. Updates regarding outstanding paperwork, your award amount and other general information will be e-mailed to you.
