How to become a guest student at WMU

1 Search for courses at WMU

Icon: search for courses.Search for WMU courses offered by campus, by subject, and by instructor to learn more about which courses will be offered during upcoming semesters.

2 Verify that courses taken here will transfer to your primary college or university

Icon: verify that courses are transferable.Guests should work with an academic advisor at their home institution before applying to determine the transferability of courses to be taken at WMU. The Michigan Transfer Network allows students, advisers, and the general public to view transfer course equivalencies between many Michigan colleges and universities.

3 Apply

Icon: students.Students who are currently in attendance and in good academic standing (at least a 2.0 grade point average and eligible to return) at another college or university may apply to Western Michigan University to take classes as a guest student.

Guest admission does not constitute degree admission to Western Michigan University.

How to submit your application

Uniform Guest Application.If you are a student at a college or university to become a guest student do one of the following:

  1. Use the Michigan Uniform Guest Application PDF. available from the Office of Admissions Web site

    Please note that students whose attending institution is outside the State of Michigan may also use this application.

    If your current institution requires use of the paper application, complete Part I and take it to the Registrar’s Office so that Part II can be completed and sent to our office.  We accept faxed applications, as well as mailed applications with Part I completed that have a transcript attached. 

    or

  2. Submit a guest application through your current institution.

    Some colleges and universities have an automated process for creating the guest application, which verifies enrollment and academic standing information. 

4 Receive your admission as a Guest Student at WMU

Once admitted you'll be notified by mail and receive your WMU account information which gives you registration access through the GoWMU portal. Off-site link.

5 Register for courses

Icon: online registration.WMU students register for courses using the GoWMU portal. Visit the Registrar's Office's register for courses page for "how to" instructions, terminology, drop/add policies, and a schedule of when to register.

6 Order your textbooks

Icon: textbook.Visit the WMU Bookstore to order textbooks for your courses online.

7 Order a parking permit

Visit Parking Services for information regarding vehicle registration and campus parking.

8 Print a map of campus

Icon: print a map of campus.Visit the WMU Maps site to view and print maps of WMU's main and engineering campuses in Kalamazoo and regional centers throughout Michigan.

9 Learn more about the academic, technology, and recreational services available to you

10 Attend your courses

Icon: alarm clock.Visit the Academic Calendar for detailed information regarding upcoming semester dates and times.

  • Summer I courses begin at 8 a.m. on May 5, 2008
  • Summer II courses begin at 8 a.m. on June 26, 2008

11 Request a transcript at the end of the semester

Icon: request a transcript..Your transcript is the official, permanent record of all the courses you have attended. Visit the Registrar's Office's Get a Transcript page for information regarding how to request your transcript.
