Online Graduate Application

Use of this application

This application form is intended for those applying for the first time to a master's, specialist, or doctoral degree program at WMU. Note that in the cases below a different form must be used instead of this one.

Who should use other forms

If you are seeking readmission to a graduate program, please use the Graduate Readmission application (PDF form). If you are not interested in obtaining a degree, please use the Graduate Non-Degree application, which is also available here in PDF form.

International students: All non-U.S.A. citizens who do not have an I-551 Permanent Resident Card should not use this web application form. Students with any type of nonimmigrant visa-- such as F, J, L, etc.--must apply using the "Application for International Students" provided by the Office of International Student Services (OISS).

Note application filing dates and departmental requirements:

  • Application dates vary by department; not all departments admit students for all semesters/sessions.
  • Many departments require additional materials (i.e., departmental application, specific standardized tests, and letters of recommendation).
  • All doctoral and specialist applicants must obtain satisfactory scores on the appropriate standardized test required for their program.

Check with the Graduate Coordinator of your academic department for specific information about the above items.

Payment of your application fee

The non refundable $40 application fee must be paid online via credit card or by electronic check. Payments are processed by a secure server.

Transcript requirements

Request each institution, except WMU, to send two official transcripts: one should be sent to Western Michigan University, Office of Admissions, 1903 W Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5211; the other to the department(s) to which you have applied. Hand carried or student copies cannot be accepted. Official transcripts from all previous institutions must be received before your application can be considered for admission.

Admission decision process

Until official transcripts and required test scores are received, your application cannot be considered for admission. Your online application is sent immediately to the academic department. As noted above, you must send official transcripts to both the Admissions Office and to your academic department. The academic department will notify you about required departmental application materials. Once the department makes an admission decision, they will notify the Admissions Office. The length of the admission process varies by department and usually takes at least six weeks. Note: All documents submitted become the property of Western Michigan University and cannot be returned to the applicant or released to other institutions.
