How does residency affect the cost of attending WMU?
Nonresidents pay the same costs as in-state students for everything except the non-resident portion of tuition. There are a number of steps that must be taken for a student to establish residency.
- Student seeking residence for fee-payment purposes are required to provide proof that their previous domiciles have been abandoned and a Michigan domicile established.
- "Domicile" is defined as the place where an individual's true, fixed and permanent home and principal establishment is and to which individuals return whenever they are absent from the University. A student is considered domiciled in Michigan if they have lived in the state for one year (12 consecutive months) immediately preceding the first day of classes of the term for which classification it sought.
- Student may apply for in-state resident classification beginning with any semester or session in which they are enrolled by completing the “Application for Resident Classification for University Admissions and/or Fee Purposes” and submitting it to the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Business. Applications can be filed one month in advance of the semester or term for which residence is sought but no later than 20 calendar days following the first day of classes for the fall and spring semesters (10 calendar days for the summer sessions). These dates apply to both undergraduate and graduate students.
