What is the history of WMU?

WMU began as the Western Normal school in 1903 as a teacher education institution.  The name was changed to Western Michigan College and remained that way until 1957 when the state designated it as the fourth public university.  While there are now 15 public universities in the state Western has maintained its position as the fourth largest research university.
