What type of local community is WMU a part of?

Western Michigan University is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  A community of 265,000, Kalamazoo is home to four colleges and universities, 36 city and county parks, bike trails and nationally known companies like Pfizer and National City Bank.   Kalamazoo downtown is just east of campus, where you will find a wide variety of eating establishments, a new 14 theater movie complex and  shopping malls.
