It’s a Great Day to be a Bronco!

March 19th, 2012 by tony No comments »

Everyday is actually a great day to be a Bronco, but after this weekend it is especially great. The Bronco hockey team won the CCHA tournament. (The CCHA is the conference they play in.) They beat the University of Michigan 3-2 to win their first title since 1986. The atmosphere at Joe Louis Arena was incredible, the Bronco fans were extremely loud. It was ultimately one of the best weekends of my entire life.

Now let’s get away from hockey. Not that I really want to, but let’s do it anyways. There are only about 5 weeks left in this semester and I’m pretty sure a lot of students are ready for summer due to this weather we have been having. It has been flirting around 80 degrees the last week or so. Walking around campus has been so enjoyable. It is definitely getting to crunch time for a lot of students, exams, quizzes, tests, projects, papers, and assignments galore. A very busy time of the year. I am ready though.

I just registered for classes for my first semester of my Senior year. It looks great. I will be taking a golf class. You cannot go wrong there. Well, that is all the stuff I have to write for now. Everybody go out and enjoy this beautiful weather. Oh, and students, make sure to work hard you last semester of high school. It really does matter.

Spring Break is Upon Us

March 5th, 2012 by tony No comments »

While most students are enjoying their spring breaks on the warm beaches of Florida or Mexico I am here in Kalamazoo. While some people may think that this is a drag, I am looking forward to having a great week helping prospective Broncos. In addition to this week being spring break, there are also Bronco hockey play-off games this weekend at Lawson Arena against Lake Superior State. It should be a great weekend.

I know I have said this many times, but wow, this semester is absolutely flying by. I can’t believe that there are less than two months left in the semester. Once the semester is over I am going to start my internship and I am super excited for that.

My advice for the week is for students to not just pick a random major. The best thing you can do is get a list of things you may have in mind and to shadow somebody who does that or do some research. It will make your decision on a major easier and it could be the difference between being in college for five or six years or being here for four years.

That is all that I have for today. For more information on the University check out our social media pages.

Almost Spring Break

February 24th, 2012 by tony No comments »

Hey everybody,

This semester has absolutely been flying by. It feels like just yesterday the semester started. Classes are still going great. My grades are good, the professors are great, and the classes are interesting. I also just completed a couple of my mid-terms. It’s relieving to know that they are done.

In addition to classes going great, I just got hired for an internship with the Interdisciplinary Health Services at WMU’s College of Health and Human Services. I am super excited for it. I will be doing public relations for them. It is going to be a great experience for me.

Tonight was also the last Bronco regular season, home hockey game. They beat the #1 team in the country, Ferris State in a shootout. It was an unbelievable atmosphere. If any of you future Broncos want a great time check out a Bronco hockey game.

A new thing that I want to start in my blogs are advice for incoming freshmen. My advice for this week is when making your college choice check out all of the schools that you are interested in. There may be a school that you don’t think that you are that interested in, but you may tour the school and it just feels right. That is one of the most important things in choosing a school. If you can’t tour then there are always virtual tours online. Getting a feel for the campus is one of the most important things.

That is all that I have for today. For more information on the University check out our social media pages.

Medallion, Bronco Hockey, and Super Bowl Sunday

February 6th, 2012 by tony No comments »
Hey everybody! These past few weekends have been pretty busy for me. Two weekends ago we had the Medallion Scholarship Competition then this weekend there were two Bronco hockey games and the Super Bowl.
When we put on the Medallion Competition they are usually pretty long days for us, but to me it is all worth it. I love interacting with the students and parents and sharing some of my experiences and answering any questions that they had. It was also rewarding to hear all of the compliments that the participants had towards the event. It means a lot when you know the hard work that people put in to make this a success.
The hockey games this weekend were fun as usual. The Broncos won Friday, but lost Saturday. While they may have lost on the scoreboard what they did this weekend was outstanding. This weekend was Hockey Cares weekend with the team wearing pink jerseys Saturday night. It was another great event if you ask me. One of the highlights to me was seeing Brett Beebe starting both nights. One of the things that Beebe is known for is starting up the Long Hair, Don’t Care charity. It goes towards breast cancer awareness. He did this because his mom is currently fighting it and all of the Lawson Lunatics have her in their prayers.
Sunday was Super Bowl Sunday as most people are aware. I didn’t know they played the Super Bowl if the Packers weren’t playing. However, it was an entertaining game between two great teams. I was happy to see the Giants win because if the Packers can’t win the team that beat them might as well. I was disappointed with the commercials, to me it seems that they get worse every year. One thing was brought to my attention during the game, this was that Madonna was making her Super Bowl debut before the Lions.

These last few weeks have been busy and the next few are going to be no different. A few exams, a few papers due, and a couple projects to start. In addition to that I just had an interview for an internship and I am really excited to hear back from them. It is something that I would love to do once I graduate and the experience now would be awesome! Well, that is all that I have for now. Until my next blog, have a great day and GOOOOOO BRONCOS!!!!!

Spring Semester is Underway

January 23rd, 2012 by tony No comments »

The Spring 2012 semester is off to a great start. We are starting our 3rd week of classes already. So far my classes are going great. I am basically just taking classes that apply to my major and minor and then one online general education course. It is awesome taking classes that I know are going to really benefit me in the future when I’m working full-time. Thus far, my favorite class would have to be Public Relations Case Studies. It is with Dr. Spence and it is a really interesting class. We get great discussions going each class period and we are learning things that are critical for any person in the public relations field.

This past weekend we had the Medallion Scholarship C0mpetition. Some of the brightest high school seniors from around the state of Michigan and surrounding states came to campus and competed. We have another competition this upcoming weekend as well.  It always feels great to help out future students and spend time with my coworkers in teh Student Ambassador Office. After the competition we got an opportunity to go to the Western/Central basketball game. The brown and gold prevailed by the final score of 64-61. It is always nice to beat our arch-rivals.

As I mentioned earlier, the semester is going great. I am still in search of an internship, but I have found some leads. The career fair is coming up in a month and that will be a great opportunity for me. Well, that is all that I have for now. I will keep everybody posted on the rest of my semester and my search for an internship.

GO BRONCOS!!!!

Another Semester in the Books

December 22nd, 2011 by tony No comments »

Hey everybody,

I haven’t really been able to post much lately, but the semester is finally over. I do not know why I am saying finally because this semester went by so fast. Grades were just posted and I passed all of my classes. It shows what hard work will do for you. Now I only have three more semesters left and I’m still looking for internships. I strongly suggest to anybody to get an internship doing anything because that looks so good on your resume and a lot of times employers won’t hire you unless you have had that prior experience.

Right now I am currently at home in Kingsford, Michigan. That’s in the Upper Peninsula. I am really enjoying time just to relax and catch up on sleep. Other than that there is not too much going on in my life. Just preparing for the spring semester. It should be a challenging one, but I am ready for it.

In Bronco sports, the football team is playing Purdue on Tuesday in the Little Caesars Bowl on ESPN and the hockey team is currently ranked #8 in the nation and they have a showdown scheduled for January 6th and 7th at Lawson Ice Arena with the #1 team in the country, Minnesota-Duluth.

That is all that I really have for right now. I will keep everybody posted on how my semester is going and how I am doing. If anybody would like to e-mail me a question you may do so by visiting the talk2wmu website at http://www.wmich.edu/talk2wmu/ambassadors/tony-r.php. I hope everybody has a Happy Holiday.

GO BRONCOS!!!

My Journey to from a Flivver to a Bronco

November 29th, 2011 by tony No comments »

Hey everybody! My name is Tony and I am a junior here at Western Michigan and I absolutely love it. Western is everything that I could ever ask for in a university. The campus is awesome, all the students and faculty are so friendly, and you never have to worry about being just another number.

I grew up in Kingsford, which is a small town located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. People may be more familiar with our neighboring town, Iron Mountain. Growing up in the UP and so close to Wisconsin (I lived right on the border) many of my classmates chose to go to college’s in Wisconsin or either Northern Michigan or Michigan Tech. Those were not the schools for me.

I chose WMU because coming out of high school I was looking at business and I knew that they had a really good business college. One of my old co-workers back home went here and he said that he loved it here as well. The big kicker to me was the campus tour that I took. Once I saw the campus I fell in love with it.

That is my story about how I came to be a Bronco! Once I was at WMU for a semester I decided that I wanted to be closer to home and I transferred to a small school in Wisconsin. After being home for Christmas break I knew that I wanted to come back to Western, but I had already made my decision to transfer. So after being at the other school for a semester I came back to Western. Let me add that every day that I was at this other school I wore Western Michigan apparel. Now here I am again, a proud Bronco!

What I am studying right now is public relations with a minor in marketing. There is a lot of focus on journalism as well. Hopefully someday I will work with a sports team in some aspect, whether it is journalism or promotions.

Now I will talk a little less about my past life and more about what is going on in my life now.

The semester is almost done and I cannot believe how fast this year is going by. It is scary to think that a year and a half from now I will be going out into the real world. Right now I am currently in the search of internships to better my chance of getting a job once I am a Western Michigan alumnus.

One of my favorite things to do at WMU is to go to sporting events, none more than to Bronco Hockey games! There is nothing like the atmosphere at Lawson Arena; it is so much fun.
