Welcome to the home page for the Office of Field Education in the School of Social Work at Western Michigan University. This site is designed to meet the needs of our students, field instructors and faculty. This site is constantly being revised and updated, please check back regularly.

This site includes the links to the College of Health and Human Services and the School of Social Work home page. In addition, you can link to the Field Education Manual, Frequently Asked Questions (a quick reference to field education requirements and expectations), and the Field Flashes (field office newsletter). The Field Manual contains necessary information concerning field placements and should be reviewed frequently. Within this document you will find field placement policies, procedures, expectations, requirements, professional practice mandates, and roles/responsibilities for all those involved in the field placement process. The forms that you will need are also available as are program curriculum, course syllabi and information regarding the Council on Social Work Education (C.S.W.E.) accreditation standards/requirements.

Also available are links to faculty liaison contact information, Field Education Advisory Committee, C.S.W.E. website and a link directly to the National Association of Social Workers (N.A.S.W.) Code of Ethics. This will enable you to download your personal copy of the code. Each social work student and practitioner should be very familiar with the aspects of the code. The section titled Links also includes sites frequently visited by human service professionals and employment opportunity sites.

The Student Section provides information for students throughout their field placement and includes the Field Application, Learning Contract templates/evaluations, sample Time Log, the required Safety Checklist, University Calendar, course syllabi, and the APA Professional Writing Guidelines, which you will be able to download and print.

The Agency Section includes necessary nformation for current and potential field instructors. The documents found here include those that agencies are required to complete to insure we meet our accreditation standards as well as the University’s Agency Affiliation Agreement. The Learning Contract templates, which also serve as the evaluation of student performance (completed each semester by all field instructors), the required Safety Checklist, and the University Calendar are also available. Also included are several items related to the field education orientation including a power point presentation, a School Course Listing, a suggested bibliography of relevant articles and a suggested student orientation checklist available for download and printing as needed.
